Buddleia davidii is commonly known as Butterfly Bush and is also uniquely referred to as the Summer Lilac. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted by the sweet nectar which emits a fragrance that butterflies can't resist like moths to a light source. We are attracted, however, to the bright colors that it adds to our gardens all summer long!
Butterfly Bush is a perfect plant for the perennial garden as well as creating a beautiful hedge. They come in an array of colors - red, blue, purple, white and pink and usually bloom from July until a heavy frost. These plants can be allowed to grow to their maximum of 5-10 ft. or can be maintained as small shrubs. In our Zone (6), they need to be treated as a perennial and should be cut back in spring when first signs of budding occurs. In late fall, Stratham Circle Nursery recommends putting hay, grass clippings, leaves or dirt piled up around the base to protect the root and base of the plant from our harsh, cold winters. You need to remove this mulch in mid to late March to ensure that the plant begins to grow.
Butterfly Bush is an easy, low maintenance plant that requires a full sun location. We do recommend pruning the spent flower blooms as it ensures continued prolific blooms of color all season long. This particular plant can perform in a marginal soil type and does not require quality soil.
