Bright orange, red spring foliage softens into green with bronzed reddish overtones in summer. In fall, the medium-sized leaved leaves become brick red and then luminescent scarlet. This mid-sized, upright maple is well-branched with a spreading canopy. Grows 6-12 inches per year.
This tree should be grown in a location with partial shade and which is shaded from the hot afternoon sun. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. For best color, most maples need a location with part day's sun. Morning sun and afternoon part shade is ideal.
