Small deciduous low-branched tree. The red, showy, tubular, flowers in 6-10" upright clusters bloom in spring and are usually in bloom for 3 weeks. The flowers are followed by brown sees in smooth husks. The yellowish-green serrated leaves fall at the end of September. Prefers fertile well-drained soil and afternoon shade. The seeds are toxic to humans and dogs. Attracts birds and hummingbirds. The attractive bark adds winter interest.
