Hibiscus syriacus is commonly known as Rose of Sharon or Shrub Althea and in Italy, it is called St. Joseph’s Rod. Having large, showy, single or double blooms in white, pink, magenta, violet, blue or any combination, Hibiscus syriacus blooms in July, August and September. The single flower blooms resemble the tropical form of Hibiscus. This plant will benefit from an annual pruning to increase fullness and large flowers. In our zone, you may need to remove winter killed stems. In spring, it may appear that Hibiscus syriacus has suffered severe winter kill, but be patient as it is late to leaf. Most other plants will be leafing out fully while this particular plant will just be starting to show signs of life.
Hibiscus syriacus does best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade, loves hot, dry weather and does well in most soil types. It makes a great hedge for screening, is beautiful in groupings or mass plantings.
If you are looking to add late season color to your landscape, Stratham Circle Nursery would highly recommend your considering Hibiscus syriacus for your landscape.
