Brenda has a lot of favorite plants but she absolutely loves oakleaf hydrangeas. It's impossible not to love love them. The leaves are uniquely shaped, the flowers are huge, and the fall foliage- spectacular! Oakleaf Hydrangea 'Alice' is an erect rounded deciduous shrub with showy white flowers that appear in early to mid-summer. As the flowers age they fade to pink-rose. Deep green leaves reach 8" long and resemble oak leaves. In the fall leaves turn attractive shades of purple, bronze, and red. Older stems exfoliate to reveal inner brown bark that is quite attractive in the winter. It needs to be pruned immediately after flowering as flower buds are produced on second year wood. Plant it as a specimen plant near a patio or entry way. If you want a plant that has year-round interest, get an oakleaf hydrangea. Attracts bees and other pollinators.
