The lustrous rich green foliage is densely borne at the ends of the fine branches, creating a dense canopy. Leaf color and texture are typical of the species. Fall color is subdued yellow, occasionally with a red suffusion. The bark exfoliates in a puzzle-like pattern exposing light gray, slate gray, gray-green and orangey brown colors. The exfoliation begins at the base of the trunk and continues upward to include upper branches. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments.
