'Betty' belongs to the 'Little Girl Series' of hybrid Magnolias developed at the US National Arboretum. It is a deciduous large shrub or medium sized tree that blooms in spring before the leaves. The fragrant, tulip-shaped flowers are deep purple-red on the outside with white on the inside. The attractive deep green oval leaves, which are about 6 inches long, turn coppery-bronze in the fall. Grow it as a lawn specimen, among other large shrubs, or beneath deciduous trees. Prefers slightly acidic, rich, and well-drained soil. Attracts birds, bees and butterflies. Deer resistant.
