Ideal for small gardens, 'Nikko' is considered one of the best cultivars. This dwarf, dense, rounded shrub features gracefully arching branches covered in abundant clusters of tiny, fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers in late spring to early summer for 10 to 14 days. Forming a ground-covering spreading mound, it has fine-textured, lance-shaped leaves, and while most deutzias have no fall color, this species turns burgundy-purple in fall. Makes a wonderful addition to shrub borders that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees and is deer resistant. Prune in spring after flowering.
Fun fact: Deutzia and hydrangeas are botanically related (i.e., by the number and arrangement of their flower parts) - they're basically cousins!
