Endless Summer®, The Original Bigleaf Hydrangea, is a spectacular hydrangea that is not only very hardy, but it blooms on both old and new wood. The result is a plant that provides beautiful flowers all summer long. The flowers grow up to 8" in diameter, with pink blooms in alkaline soils and blue blooms in acidic soil. Since Endless Summer® blooms on new wood, removal of spent flowers will encourage rebloom. The flowers are excellent for cutting. It has forest green deciduous foliage. The glossy pointy leaves do not develop any appreciable fall color. This hydrangea is a must for your garden landscape! Attracts butterflies and bees. To change their color, add aluminum sulfate to the soil to make the flowers bluer or add lime to the soil to make them pinker. Treatment should occur ahead of time (late fall or early spring).
Interesting fact.....
'Endless Summer' was developed by Bailey Nurseries in collaboration with world renowned woody plant guru, Michael Dirr. Walking through Bailey's planting fields, Mike noticed an unusual specimen of Hydrangea macrophylla that bloomed not only on old growth, as most do, but on new growth too. The rest of the interesting story can be found in the 'Did You Know' section. Believe it or not, it was almost "chucked"!! Can you imagine that?
Dr. Dirr is the go-to person if you have questions about plants! If you ever find out that he in the area, tell him to stop by! For us in the industry, he's bigger than Taylor Swift. Some of his books are listed in our 'Resources' section.
