The delicate foliage on this stunning, upright tree looks more like fern fronds than typical Hinoki branches. Each arching branch tapers to a fine point. Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Filicoides Compacta’ will develop a handsome, open habit, and will stand out as a focal point or combine nicely in an evergreen screen. It is primarily valued in the landscape or garden for its distinctively pyramidal habit of growth. It has attractive bluish-green foliage with hints of powder blue which emerges chartreuse in spring. The scale-like sprays of foliage are highly ornamental and remain bluish-green throughout the winter. If desired, judicious pruning encourages a more compact shape. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade.
Grows 6-8 inches a year.
It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is quite intolerant of urban pollution, therefore inner city or urban streetside plantings are best avoided, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. This is a relatively low maintenance tree. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. This is a selection of a native North American species.
