Unique in form and flower, 'Galaxy' is a small deciduous tree adorned with a profusion of dark pink flowers in mid-spring before the leaves. Opening from deep red-purple buds, the slightly fragrant, large flowers, 8 inches across, 12 tepals, light pinkish-purple outside, paler rose within. Since they bloom late enough, they usually escape the early spring frost damage. It is an upright tree with ascending branches and a distinct oval canopy of oval, dark green leaves that turn coppery-bronze in fall. Like most magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Protect from strong wind to enhance and prolong the flowering season. Attracts bees and butterflies. Deer resistant.
