Betula nigra 'Heritage' is a beautiful river birch that is prized for its beautiful peeling bark. Salmon-cream to brownish at first, it exfoliates to reveal a creamy-white inner bark. This medium-sized deciduous multi-stemmed tree has a large, pyramidal, upright habit. It is vigorous and fast-growing. The foliage of diamond-shaped, serrated bright green leaves deepens to dark green as the season progresses and in the fall turns pale yellow. 'Heritage' is a specific cultivar of the river birch tree. River birch trees are native to the eastern United States. Provides striking winter interest. This versatile, highly heat tolerant tree does well in high water tables and problematic low wet soils, yet adapts to mild drought when established. Prefers acidic soil.
