Favored by gardeners in the Northeast, 'Hino Crimson' is one of the hardiest of the semi-dwarf, broad-leaved evergreen azaleas. The brilliant scarlett red flowers with dark crimson throats bloom in early to mid-spring. The flowering is intense that the blooms almost entirely cover the shrub. The foliage of small, elliptic, shiny dark green leaves turns bronze to red in cold weather. It's best grown in moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Prefers morning sun and part shade in the afternoon. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees.
