Japanese Stewartia is a beautiful tree that has something to offer in every season. July brings 2-3” white flowers, whose tissue paper-like petals cup golden centers fringed with orange anthers. However, weeks of continuous bloom from this stunning floral display cannot rival the tree’s spectacular multicolor exfoliating bark, which peels off in plates to reveal shades of silver, orange, and red-brown. Branching that tends to begin low on the trunk contributes to its elegant pyramidal form, and fall color is a flaming burgundy-red.
