Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Kosteri’ is a well-known selection that has enjoyed popularity for decades. Superior form, slow growth and shapely sprays of feathery, twisting foliage account for its reputation. ‘Kosteri’ maintains a compact rounded shape for several years before eventually developing into a broad, but tidy, dense pyramid. It has light green foliage. Hints of bronze accent the tiers of soft, muted green branches, especially in winter.
It lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition which should be used to full effect. This is a relatively low maintenance shrub. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. 'Kosteri' is resistant to browsing by deer. Grows 3-6 inches a year.
