Acer palmatum ‘Ojishi’ is primarily valued in the landscape or garden for its habit of growth. It is named for the mythological male lion of Japanese drama and displays short branches loaded with small, densely packed, rich green leaves. They produce a sculptural quality that seems to develop features, so when the crinkled palmate leaves, that are highly ornamental, turn outstanding shades of burnt-orange to red in fall, a lion’s head and mane are easy to imagine. The rough gray bark and red branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape. Use this superb cultivar for small areas and for bonsai culture. Grows 6-12 inches a year.
This tree should be grown in a location with partial shade and which is shaded from the hot afternoon sun. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. For best color, most maples need a location with part day's sun. Morning sun and afternoon part shade is ideal.
