Pin Oak is a medium sized tree growing 60-80’ tall with a trunk diameter of 3’. A tree in 10 years could reach the height of 25’. It is considered a rapid growing tree. The upper branches point upwards, the middle branches are perpendicular to the trunk and the lower branches angle and droop down.
Pin Oak is naturally a wetland tree and develops a shallow fibrous root system, unlike many Oaks which have a strong deep tap root. They can tolerate a site that floods, but not standing water for any length of time and will tolerate clay soils. The shallow fibrous root system makes transplanting very easy with minimal transplant shock.
The bark was once used by some Native American tribes to make a drink for the treatment of intestinal pain. The name Pin Oak may be derived from the historical use of hardwood pins in wood building construction.
If you are looking for a medium to large shade tree that has a beautiful, graceful look as it ages, Stratham Circle Nursery would recommend a Pin Oak.
