A charming, compact form of the Star Magnolia, 'Royal Star' is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree of great popularity. Opening from pale pink buds, masses of exceptionally large, pure white flowers appears in early spring. Fragrant, each blossom counts up to 25-30 tepals. The overall effect of these tepals is that of a starburst. The flowers are borne on the leafless branches before the leaves begin to unfurl. More robust and faster growing than most, 'Royal Star' blooms up to 10 days earlier. The pointy, dark green leaves turn coppery-bronze in fall. The fruits are showy pink pods displayed in early fall.
It is not particular as to soil type, but has a definite preference for acidic soils. It will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Attracts butterflies and bees. Deer resistant.
Note: Its blooms, like those of most early blooming Magnolias, are susceptible to late frost.
