Selected for its compact habit with slender foliage of thick, spineless leaves, which emerge light green in early spring before turning dark green. In late spring to early summer, it produces abundant small greenish-white flowers that are followed by a profusion of dak blue-black berries in fall. Particularly attractive, they enliven the winter landscape and often persist through the winter unless eaten by birds, 'Shamrock' is a female plant and needs a male pollinator to produce attractive berries.
It prefers to grow in moist to wet soil. It is very fussy about its soil conditions and must have rich, acidic soils to ensure success, and is subject to chlorosis (yellowing) of the foliage in alkaline soils. It is highly tolerant of coastal exposure, erosion control, and urban pollution. Benefits birds. Deer and rabbit resistant.
