The beautiful leaves are a rich, reddish purple color, approaching burgundy. The color remains very strong until the end of the summer, then fading slightly to red-green. This cultivar holds its color better than most similar cultivars of the Matsumura Group. It is an excellent specimen tree for the landscape, adding color in the spring and retaining the deep tones throughout the summer. It produces red samaras from early to mid fall. Trees broaden with maturity to develop a rounded silhouette, which provides good winter interest, especially combined with bark that has distinctive silver striations.

This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. You may want to keep it away from hot, dry locations that receive direct afternoon sun or which get reflected sunlight, such as against the south side of a white wall. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. For best color, most maples need a location with part day's sun. Morning sun and afternoon part shade is ideal.
