A long-established hybrid forsythia grown for its cheerful, yellow spring blossom, Forsythia x intermedia Spectabilis is a large, vigorous, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with an open, upright, vase-shaped habit with bright-yellow, four-petaled flowers which appear before the leaves in early to mid-spring. The foliage of narrowly, ovate, sharply serrated, dark green leaves remains attractive throughout the season and turns yellow with purple tinges in the fall. This cultivar has been around for many years and serves as standard. Low maintenance, this plant is deer resistant and fairly trouble-free. It provides habitat for bees, birds and other wildlife.
