The long, fine foliage, narrow, pendulous stems and irregular mounding habit make Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Filifera’ a compelling garden accent. The string-like foliage, a fresh green in spring, takes on softer tones in winter and complements the reddish brown bark. Over time, trees develop a compact, pyramidal form that makes them excellent candidates for sculpting. Hardy and adaptable to both cold and warm climates. It lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition which can make it a great accent feature on this basis alone.
This is a relatively low maintenance tree. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions. It is not particular as to soil type, but has a definite preference for acidic soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Also known as Threadleaf Falsecypress.
*** According to Dr. Michael Dirr, it usually grows no higher than 6 - 8' after 10 to 15 years, although it can become quite large with time.
